My 3-day journey

My journey began with an invite to the first Michigan Breast Cancer 3-day in 2002. I know no one with breast cancer, but had done many charity walks in the past. After this walk, I was sore, tired, and ready to do it again. The organization by the dedicated staff, the full support of the amazing Michigan crew, and the stories I heard inspired me to continue.

In 2005, I was crewing in Arizona. After dinner, I was watching the entertainment on stage. Another pit crew was in costume, dancing and singing. All but one left the stage. Brittany removed her big boobs and big butt, then her big hair. She looked like she was 12 years old and totally bald.
She told us she was 21, and diagnosed at 18. I did not hear much more, I was numb. The next day I committed to walk in all 12 events for 2006.

In 2007, I carried 2 stuffed animals all along the way. My pink Pammie bear represented Pam, my friend, 3-day coach and mentor. She was diagnosed for the second time that year. I plan to attend her depinkify party to represent her victory over this disease. My teal Mo dragon represented Maureen, a friend for many years, with ovarian cancer. She was a champion for children, and helped me by organizing a fund raiser at the local Comedy Castle. Last week, I attended her wake there. She left behind a wonderful husband, a daughter in college, and a son in the 9th grade.

I also walk for the many survivors I have met at home and along the way. In 2008, I will walk in all 14 events. I must raise at least $31,000 to do it. Please help by donating at http://www.pinkbeardbarry.com.
